Course Description
Specific knowledge, skills, and attitudes are required for working in psychiatry and providing care to patients with mental health needs. These are often difficult to obtain through didactic coursework and require experiential (“hands on”) learning. Experiences available in psychiatric practice often only provide partial insight into the field or a specific skill. Simulation training offers the opportunity to bridge the gap between theory and practice in a safe and structured environment.
Simulation training is used in a variety of medical specialties and is recognized as an effective approach to enhance patient safety and teamwork in addition to other relevant clinical outcomes. Simulations in psychiatry are associated with significant positive effects in attitudes, skills, knowledge, and behaviors. Additionally, although limited, the available data suggests that simulation training in psychiatry is associated with improved patient outcomes. In this session, learners will gain exposure to simulation as a valuable tool for educators to teach clinical skills and to evaluate learners. This will include instruction on the essential techniques and components necessary for creating meaningful simulation experiences.
Learning Objectives
- Describe the benefits and uses for mental health simulation (MHS) training as an evidence-based tool in psychiatric education.
- Assess the effectiveness of MHS training when used in psychiatric education for pharmacy and interprofessional healthcare experiences.
- Educate psychiatric practitioners on the essential MHS techniques and skills necessary for creating meaningful simulation experiences.

Stephanie Nichols, Pharm.D., BCPS, BCPP, FCCP is an Associate Professor in the University of New England School of Pharmacy, Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry in the Tufts University School of Medicine, core faculty in the MMC/VA Addiction Medicine Fellowship Program, and lecturer in the MMC Psychiatry Residency Program. She is a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist and Psychiatric Pharmacist and a Fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy. She serves on Maine’s Opioid Response Clinical Advisory Committee, Maine’s Medical Professionals Health Program Advisory Committee, the Co-Occurring Collaborative Serving Maine’s Board of Directors and as a Senior Editor for the College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists’ Board Certified Psychiatric Pharmacist Recertification Book and Preparatory Series. She has co-authored publications in Pharmacotherapy, Pharmacology, Current Psychiatry, Journal of Patient Safety, Pain, Journal of Psychopharmacology, Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs, Journal of Addiction Medicine, and Psychosomatics.

Dr. Devon Sherwood is an Associate Professor at the University of New England School of Pharmacy and Clinical Specialist in Psychiatric Pharmacy at Spring Harbor Hospital in Portland, Maine. She has been integrally involved in interprofessional mental health simulation trainings serving as an SBIRT Trainer and Champion awarded through a SAMHSA grant to the University of New England's 11 health professions. She also serves as an instructor for simulation labs for the Interprofessional Experience course during pharmacy students P3 year for emergency naloxone training.
