Course Description
Mental health stigma is rampant among not only patients but health care providers. This stigma prevents many from seeking and receiving the care they need. The recovery community has utilized the power of trained individuals with lived experience, otherwise known as peer specialists, to decrease this stigma by making it more acceptable and effective to live with a mental health condition. Although most peer specialists work at the level of the lay public, there is value in the nexus of the clinician and the peer specialist. Using my own personal experience, I will illustrate how a clinician who is also a peer specialist can leverage this combination to improve both patient care and clinician well-being.

Jacintha Cauffield, PharmD, BCPS, CDCES, CRPS-A

Dr. Cauffield completed her Doctor of Pharmacy at University of Maryland. This was followed by a two year fellowship in family medicine at the University of Florida under the direction of Dr. John Gums. Her past practice experience includes clinical pharmacy at the West Palm Beach VAMC and experience in collaborative practice in both family medicine and hospice in Vancouver, WA. She speaks at the state and national level on psychiatric conditions, including the ACCP Pharmacotherapy Review Course. She is a Mental Health First Aid Instructor and a Certified Recovery Peer Specialist. She is currently an Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice at Palm Beach Atlantic’s Lloyd L. Gregory School of Pharmacy. Her practice site is based out of Mental Health America of the Palm Beaches, where she runs a weekly medication discussion group and sees patients for medication management.
