Depression / Postpartum Depression: Novel Mechanisms, Formulations, and REMS

Target Audience

This course is designed for pharmacists, nurse practitioners or other health care professionals involved in the comprehensive medication management of psychiatric and/or neurological patients.

Session Summary

Research suggests that although alterations of central monoamines might contribute to the generation of depressive states, they do are not necessarily the primary cause of depression. Treatment resistant depression occurs in at least 15–30% of major depressive disorder cases, and in the post-partum depression population, remission rates remain low. Currently available antidepressants require 4-6 weeks of administration prior to the onset of therapeutic efficacy, during which time patients continue to experience symptoms of depression and suicidal ideation. Recently approved agents with more rapid onset have the potential to have a significant impact on treatment-resistant and post-partum depression.

This session will provide an update on novel antidepressant treatments that are recently available or in development, including the mechanisms of action that are thought to underlie their potential antidepressant effects and practical aspects for safe and effective use.

Learning Objectives

  1. Explain the potential utility of antidepressant medications that do not act on monoamines.
  2. Explore the emerging mechanisms of action and efficacy of novel antidepressants in development or recently approved for use.
  3. Describe the practical use of newly approved antidepressants including place in therapy, access and referral, dosing, monitoring, and follow-up.
  4. Recognize advantages and limitations of novel antidepressants.
