This course is designed for pharmacists, nurse practitioners or other health care professionals involved in the comprehensive medication management of psychiatric and/or neurological patients.
As the opioid epidemic continues to affect patients and families across the United States, it is imperative health care professionals continue to work towards effective and lasting treatment for patients with opioid use disorder (OUD). Ongoing stigma and lack of education contributes to less than optimal care for those with OUD. Initiating medication assisted treatment (MAT) in an inpatient or emergency department setting and transitioning patients to office-based treatment upon discharge may improve treatment retention. However, there continues to be a lack of data on patient-related factors that may promote the successful continuation of treatment upon discharge. Health care providers should work together to optimize strategies in identifying patients with OUD, engaging patients and initiating MAT, and facilitating the continuation of therapy through transitions. In this session, the audience will learn about ongoing social and ethical issues for treatment of patients with OUD, strategies to identify and overcome barriers to initiate MAT, and how to facilitate the continuation of MAT in a variety of settings.
