Activity Dates: 04/24/2020 - 04/24/2023

Target Audience

This course is designed for pharmacists, nurse practitioners or other health care professionals involved in the comprehensive medication management of psychiatric and/or neurological patients.

Session Summary

Antiseizure medications are commonly used to treat a variety of neurological (e.g. epilepsy, epilepsy syndromes, pain, spasticity, migraine headache) and psychiatric conditions (bipolar disorder, aggression, personality disorders). It is well established that antiseizure medication use can be associated with positive or negative psychiatric medication effect(s) depending on the individual medication and patient factors. Patients with epilepsy may also already have a pre-existing psychiatric or neurologic disorder that may be exacerbated by the use of an antiseizure medication. The use of select antiseizure medications is associated with psychiatric and behavioral adverse effects ranging from minor behavioral changes to severe psychiatric complications such as depression, suicidality, and aggression. As antiseizure medications are commonly utilized in clinical practice and, over the past decade, there have been several newly approved medications, it is important to review these adverse effects and potential complications of older and newer antiseizure medications, predictors of these adverse effects, and management strategies to decrease the risk and/or severity of experienced psychiatric and behavioral adverse effects(s) and complication(s).
