Course Description
Transgender patients are at a heightened risk of mental illness and suicidality, especially during puberty when physical characteristics emphasize the discrepancy in their gender identity. Gender-affirming care has shown to reduce this risk, but adolescents face unique barriers to receiving this care. This session will allow participants to implement destigmatizing language in their practice, recognize ideal gender-affirmation treatment strategies for pediatric patients, and identify barriers to receiving this care.
Learning Objectives
- Review components of the adolescent transgender experience, including gender identity, mental illness, and gender-affirming care.
- Recognize barriers to care faced by adolescent transgender patients and potential policy and/or legal actions that can provide resolution.
- Describe the multi-disciplinary approach to care for the process of gender affirmation in the adolescent population.
