Course Description
The American Association of Psychiatric Pharmacists (AAPP) seeks to ensure every patient with a mental health and substance use disorder have their medications reviewed, optimized, and/or managed by a psychiatric pharmacist. Psychotropic Stewardship Programs (PSPs) include a psychiatric pharmacist as part of the psychotropic stewardship team. The Board Certified Psychiatric Pharmacist (BCPP) credential is the gold standard for psychiatric pharmacists, and BCPPs must drive the development of psychotropic stewardship teams to promote the safe and effective use of psychotropic medications that can improve the lives of our patients. Implementation of PSPs play a key role in the advancement of psychiatric pharmacy practice.
The Core Outcome Set (COS) assists psychiatric pharmacists in the development, assessment, and dissemination of outcomes research. These outcomes can be used to generate meaningful data that demonstrates the value of the psychiatric pharmacist and their contribution on the patient care team. The tools outlined can be applied to a variety of practice settings and patient populations. Utilization of these tools will help guide BCPPs in their work to develop PSPs to implement core outcomes, document successes, and generate support to enhance patient care and impact regulatory standards across health-systems.
