Research has shown time and again that as social beings we are designed to be part of a community, a tribe, a group of humans that we can call “our people.” I have tribes of people in all aspects of my life, with AAPP being one of them and one of my most valued.
Thanks to the work of dozens of volunteers, the AAPP staff, and the Board of Directors, the AAPP Annual Meeting offers the blended opportunity to expand our knowledge and horizons through education and research but also to connect and expand our community. AAPP 2024 delivered just that; the opportunity to interact with hundreds of our colleagues as well as leaders in the field of psychiatry and psychiatric pharmacy through:
We also took advantage of having hundreds of members available in-person to layer in meetings and events with committees, task forces, and other stakeholders. These activities allowed us to:
We also had the opportunity to celebrate and honor during AAPP 2024. This included recognizing Dr. Vicki Ellingrod as our Saklad Memorial Award recipient as well as our research award winners. And, after many months of work by our Research Design Task Force and other committees, we awarded one Outcomes Award grant to the following researchers:
Esti Iturralde, PhD, Anne Rosenthal, MD, and Hannah Van Ochten, PharmD of Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research. Psychiatric pharmacist management of cardiometabolic risk for adults with serious mental illness in outpatient safety-net mental health clinics in San Francisco.
The Outcomes Award grants represent a sizable commitment of just under $250,000 in order for the AAPP Foundation to advance funded research intended to generate high-quality large sample size (n) data sets that evaluate the impact of integrating psychiatric pharmacists into team-based mental health care in studies with multiple research sites and investigators. This research initiative builds off the work of numerous committees and task forces operating the past 18 months as summarized briefly below and on our website.
We look forward to the results of this significant study in 2026 and 2027 which will, in turn, impact AAPP’s future path in research and advocacy on behalf of the profession.
We know that many members weren’t able to join us at AAPP 2024 and you were missed. However, we look forward to providing you with updates through our various communications and hopefully seeing you in person at AAPP 2025 in Salt Lake City, April 27-30. In the meantime, maintain your connections through our communities and the many educational opportunities coming this summer such as our SUD Scoop Series and Mental Health First Aid courtesy of the AAPP Foundation. As well, know that we are always just an email or phone call away to answer your questions and serve you.
