Alcohol use disorder continues to be a condition that is detrimentally affecting the lives of many Americans.1,2 Mortality data is concerning with rates of alcohol-induced deaths in adults aged 25 and older on the rise.3 With the expense of inpatient hospitalization and stigma of mental health treatment being deterring factors in those seeking care, it’s important to utilize ambulatory management of these disease states when feasible. Those with mild or moderate alcohol withdrawal symptoms may be treated as outpatients, which reduces costs and interruption of daily responsibilities.2 Pharmacists can play a vital role in choosing appropriate therapeutic management options for ambulatory detoxification from alcohol.4.5 This CPNP 2022 session is designed to provide education on evidence-based treatment strategies and pharmacotherapy plans for managing alcohol withdrawal in the outpatient setting.

The learning objectives for this program are:

  • Describe the prevalence of alcohol use disorder, including the rates of those seeking care for withdrawal.
  • Discuss the barriers and potential solutions regarding the outpatient management of alcohol withdrawal.
  • Review optimal therapeutic management options for outpatient detoxification from alcohol.

The Programming Committee is excited to have one of our own CPNP members, Troy A. Moore, MS, BCPP, assist with navigating treatment options for alcohol withdrawal in the outpatient setting.

Dr. Moore received his PharmD from the University of New Mexico College of Pharmacy in 2003. He subsequently attended the University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy, receiving his Master of Science in Pharmacy in 2005 while completing a 2-year Psychiatric Pharmacy Residency at the San Antonio State Hospital and the South Texas Veterans Health Care System (STVHCS).
