Target Audience

This course is designed for pharmacists, nurse practitioners or other health care professionals involved in the comprehensive medication management of psychiatric and/or neurological patients.

Session Summary

Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) is a useful tool for many medical and psychiatric medications for determining effectiveness and safety. TDM has been established for a handful of psychotropic medications, including some antipsychotics; however, utilization is hindered by differences in opinion regarding utility. Understanding when to use TDM, as well as how to interpret results including applicability of safety outcomes, effectiveness, and/or just adherence (yes/no), is important for future directions and improvement of the treatment for patients. Current research indicating established therapeutic reference ranges for antipsychotics is limited and varies in strength of recommendation between antipsychotics. Awareness of recent publications and potential deviations in recommendations is imperative for the present and future utility of TDM in antipsychotics.
