Target Audience

This course is designed for pharmacists, nurse practitioners or other health care professionals involved in the comprehensive medication management of psychiatric and/or neurological patients.

Session Summary

Scientific leaders, including the Alzheimer's Association and representatives from more than 25 countries, are working together with technical guidance from the World Health Organization (WHO) to track the long-term impact of SARS-CoV-2 (also known as novel coronavirus, COVID-19) on the brain. The ongoing pandemic of SARS-CoV-2 has focused global health care resources on treating affected individuals and preventing the further spread of the infection. Although little is known about the long-term consequences of SARS-CoV-2 infection, there are several research studies to suggest that COVID-19 is associated with neurological complications. The downstream impact of COVID-19 on the brain is not well understood. There are many unanswered questions regarding the effects of SARS-CoV-2 on the cerebrovascular system (e.g., blood-brain barrier integrity), the brain's immune response and more.

Learning Objectives

  1. Provide an overview of the neurological complications of SARS-CoV-2 infection, especially clinical presentation related to the central nervous system.
  2. Discuss the biological characteristics of SARS-CoV-2 that cause direct or indirect brain injury and reason for common manifestation of hyposmia/anosmia, dysgeusia, headache, fatigue and altered mental status.
  3. Evaluate the evidence for and against a higher risk of stroke and cerebrovascular disease and subsequent neurodegeneration in SARS-CoV-2 infected individuals.
  4. Summarize ongoing efforts and findings to understand possible impact of genetic, geographic, race, ethnic and other factors in determining immediate and long-term neurological sequelae.
