Session Summary

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are incredibly common and affect people of all backgrounds. ACEs are associated with medical, social, and public health problems. For example, ACEs are associated with 7 out of the top 10 chronic disease states. Those with high exposure to ACEs have a 20-year difference in life-expectancy. Emerging evidence regarding gene expression and increased inflammatory markers offer possible mechanisms by which ACEs, or toxic stress, are associated with these outcomes. While screening for ACEs is recommended, its practice is still limited. Additional education is needed to increase awareness of ACEs as well as the strategies that may be employed to prevent them. Participants will learn how to identify and screen for ACEs and the mechanisms how ACEs may affect the development of psychopathology and chronic illness. They will also learn how ACEs can affect public health and evidence-based strategies for prevention.
