Target Audience

This course is designed for pharmacists, nurse practitioners or other health care professionals involved in the comprehensive medication management of psychiatric and/or neurological patients.

Session Summary

Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States resulting in more than 47,000 deaths in 2017, or about one death every 11 minutes. Suicide rates vary by race/ethnicity, age, and other population characteristics, and there are more than 120 prescription drugs with labeling that includes language about suicidal ideation or behavior. There is a great need for widespread education about suicide awareness and prevention and for health care entities to adopt a collaborative approach to the problem. For psychiatric pharmacists, being able to identify patients with suicidal ideation and respond to this risk is a key skill set that must developed through didactic education and clinical experience. In this session, participants will learn about standardized, evidence-based suicide screening and structured methods for the subsequent evaluation of those who screen positive for suicide risk.
