Dr. Stimmel is Professor Emeritus of Clinical Pharmacy at the USC School of Pharmacy, retiring after 46 years at USC. He served as the Interim Dean in 2015-2016 and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at the School of Pharmacy from 2016-2020. He received a PharmD from the University of California San Francisco and completed a one-year residency at Langley Porter Neuropsychiatric Institute in San Francisco.
 
He is a founding member and Past President of the College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists. He is a founding member, elected fellow, and Past President of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, and an original member and past Chair of the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties’ Specialty Council on Psychiatric Pharmacy Practice. Dr. Stimmel has served on the Board of Directors of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, and as Vice-chair of ASHP’s Commission on Therapeutics. He is an elected member of the World Association for Sexual Health, member of the Sexual Medicine Society of North America, and member of the International Society for Sexual Medicine.
 
Dr. Stimmel authored over 230 articles and textbook chapters in the areas of clinical psychopharmacology, expanded scope of practice for pharmacists, sexual medicine, and pharmaco-economics of psychotropic drugs. He pioneered efforts in developing psychiatric pharmacy practice, education, and residency programs, as well as investigating and securing prescriptive authority for pharmacists in California. He received the ACCP Clinical Practice Award in 1991, the first Judith Saklad Memorial Lecture Award from CPNP in 1998, and the Career Achievement Award from the CPNP Foundation in 2016.  He was recognized as the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year by the University of California San Francisco School of Pharmacy in 2019.
 
He taught both pharmacy and medical students and residents in topic areas of clinical psychopharmacology, patient medication counseling and sexual medicine.  Over a 10 year period he served as a visiting professor at several schools of pharmacy in Japan and Thailand.  For 25 years Dr. Stimmel provided direct patient care in an adult psychiatric hospital and various psychiatric clinics, and for 15 years maintained an active clinical practice at both the LAC/USC Geriatrics Primary Care Clinic and the Rheumatology Clinic focusing on depression management.
