It is well-known that one of the most significant public health problems in the United States is substance misuse and substance use disorders (SUDs). It is also well-known that SUDs are highly co-morbid with psychiatric disorders, with over 9 million adults experiencing a mental illness and at least one co-occurring SUD in any one year. The presence of both conditions can negatively impact each individual condition. And although integrating SUD and mental health services is important, effective treatment approaches to concurrently address psychiatric illness and substance use as dual diagnoses are not routinely occurring in practice.
These are the reasons CPNP has prioritized SUD in its strategic plan and also why CPNP’s inaugural fall, virtual Summit is focused on providing effective treatment for individuals living with co-occurring substance use and psychiatric disorders.
