Target Audience

If you are a pharmacist, nurse practitioner, or other health care professional involved in the comprehensive medication management of individuals living with mental health and/or substance use disorders, we invite you to participate in this online course.

Session Summary

Limitations with prescription pharmacologic treatments for anxiety disorders can lead to patients seeking alternative treatments, such as cannabis or cannabidiol. Cannabis and cannabidiol are now legal in many states, making them easily accessible to patients. These products are not incorporated into treatment guidelines, leaving clinicians without clear guidance on their role. Study results on the safety and efficacy of cannabis and/or cannabidiol are mixed, making application to patients especially difficult. This session will focus on interpretation of the cannabis/cannabidiol literature so psychiatric pharmacists can determine its application to patients with anxiety disorders. In addition, the presentation will highlight the safety and efficacy of these products so psychiatric pharmacists can properly educate patients and decide if there is a role for their use in the treatment of anxiety.
