Target Audience

This course is designed for pharmacists, nurse practitioners or other health care professionals involved in the comprehensive medication management of psychiatric and/or neurological patients.

Session Summary

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality with increasing incidence worldwide. Falls, motor vehicle crashes, and intentional self-harm are primary causes of TBI, which may lead to long-term complications or death. The focus of this presentation is the persistent and long-term neurologic sequelae of TBI, including post-traumatic epilepsy, post-traumatic headache, post-traumatic endocrinopathies and post-concussive syndrome. Pharmacological treatments are often indicated for these chronic sequelae of TBI. However, the evidence base for pharmacologic treatments in specific post-traumatic disorders is sparse and there is often variance in the literature regarding efficacy of given agents; this is likely due to a variety of factors including heterogeneity in injury type, injury severity, and criteria for defining post-traumatic sequalae. Furthermore, polypharmacy is prevalent in these patients due to the presence of multiple comorbid neurologic and psychiatric conditions post-TBI which are often difficult-to-treat; the literature is also sparse regarding implications of polypharmacy in this population, though there is increasing recognition of the effects of excess anticholinergic burden on worsening cognition in this at-risks population. Nevertheless, the pharmacist can play a strong role in the management of TBI given the large number of pharmacological interventions needed in this population.
