Target Audience

If you are a pharmacist, nurse practitioner, or other health care professional involved in the comprehensive medication management of individuals living with mental health and/or substance use disorders, we invite you to participate in this online course.

Session Summary

This self-study course focuses on understanding and interpreting pharmacoeconomic studies. Using a comprehensive outline, learners will understand the difference between efficacy and effectiveness studies and the different types of pharmacoeconomic studies. Focus will be placed on the different types of outcomes, the features of decision and sensitivity analysis, the key features of meta-analyses and the common statistical analyses included in a meta-analysis.

You will proceed through the following steps to satisfactorily complete this course:

  • Complete the post-test at the end of the activity no later than the closing activity date.
  • Complete the evaluation at the end of the activity.
  • If necessary, complete the post-test retest no later than the closing activity date.
  • Receive a passing grade (70%).
  • Provide the necessary details in your profile to ensure correct reporting by AAPP to CPE Monitor.

  1. Explain the unique, core components of a pharmacoeconomic analysis.
  2. Describe the differences between the four primary perspectives from which a pharmacoeconomic analysis can be conducted.
  3. Contrast four economic evaluation methods commonly applied to pharmacy practice in today's healthcare settings, including the different outcomes that are employed by each method.
  4. Describe an incremental cost-effectiveness ratio.
  5. Distinguish between a systematic review and a meta-analysis.
  6. Outline key features of a meta-analysis and how the data are analyzed.
  7. Describe the essential features of humanistic outcome measures including health status, patient satisfaction, work outcomes, and patient-based assessments.
  8. Compare and contrast decision trees and Markov modeling for pharmacoeconomic analysis.
