Impact of Microaggressions on Practice

Microaggressions are a form of discrimination and may result from conscious or unconscious bias; they are often subtle and may be verbal or non-verbal discriminations due to sex, race, socioeconomic status, physical or learning disabilities, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and gender identity. Multiple studies have shown microaggressions can lead to decreased medical and psychological health outcomes, and research also indicates that they can impact individuals with mental illness by causing frustration, diminishing self-esteem, and fostering feelings of alienation, ultimately leading to treatment nonadherence. The presence of microaggressions, and their impact on patients and healthcare providers, can compromise the delivery and quality of patient care. This program will discuss how psychiatric pharmacists can identify microaggressions, assess the impact on patient care, and how to address the situation(s) in clinical settings.
