"This unique and valuable training DVD demonstrates the proper administration technique and accurate severity rating assessments for various medication-induced movement disorders." ( more) - John Kane, MD
This unique and valuable training DVD demonstrates the proper administration technique and accurate severity rating assessments for various medication-induced movement disorders. It is critical for all medical professionals who provide care to those who receive antipsychotic medications or other medications with the potential to cause movement disorders to be skilled in the proper identification and assessment of these disorders in order to provide for earlier treatment, better patient outcomes, and to reduce the risk of patients not adhering to their medication regimen. "The training tool is highly professional. The interactions between the rater and the individual should serve as models for how we all should communicate with our patients when performing these assessments." ( more) - Joseph Friedman, MD
The importance of recognizing drug-induced movement disorders is no less important now than before the introduction of the "atypical" neuroleptics. While the incidence of these movement disorders has lessened, they have not gone away. Yet physicians and other health professionals in the mental health field are considerably less well-trained in recognizing them. CPNP’s movement disorder training video reviews four rating instruments for recording severity of Parkinsonism, akathisia and tardive dyskinesia. Reliable ratings are important for documenting any changes that may occur with treatment. To rate reliably, raters must agree on how to administer a particular test and how to score severity. Consistency between raters is crucial. The raters in the video are extremely helpful in teaching the viewer how to perform these assessments accurately and reliably. In addition, the training tool is highly professional. The interactions between the rater and the individual should serve as models for how we all should communicate with our patients when performing these assessments. The training provided by this video will be valuable to all mental health professionals who evaluate individuals for the adverse effects of neuroleptics, from attending level psychiatrists to trainees, nurses, pharmacists and any others involved. "I strongly recommend it to researchers [and their research assistants] and clinicians alike." ( more) - Henry A. Nasrallah, MD
As someone who spent many years doing research in drug-induced movement disorders in psychiatric patients, I was highly impressed with the content and quality of the CPNP movement disorders DVD. It is a wonderful teaching tool for health professionals including physicians, pharmacists, nurses and other disciplines who assess and treat patients who may develop iatrogenic movement disorders such as dystonia, akathisia, dyskinesia or parkinsonism. The audio-visual approach is the ideal method to learn and to teach students and residents in the neuropsychiatric disciplines. I strongly recommend it to researchers [and their research assistants] and clinicians alike, and it can also be used as a patient-education tool. Very well done, CPNP! Henry A. Nasrallah, MD

Featured rating scales include the more commonly utilized movement disorder rating scales—the AIMS, DISCUS, MSAS and BARS. The DVD includes the following segments:
- Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale (AIMS) patient examination and test case with comparison to expert rater
- Dyskinesia Identification System: Condensed User Scale (DISCUS) patient examination and test case with comparison to expert rater
- Modified Simpson-Angus Scale (MSAS) patient examination and a description of differences between the SAS and the modified-SAS
