Andrew Novick, MD, PhD
Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Medical Director – CU Esketamine Program,
Reproductive Psychiatrist – Center for Women’s Behavioral Health and Wellness
Aurora, CO
Dr Andrew Novick is an assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacology and Toxicology from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, and then went on to receive his dual MD/PHD degrees from the University of South Dakota. His doctoral work focused on the effects of adolescent social defeat stress on dopamine system dynamics and the use of selective dopamine and norepinephrine re-uptake inhibitors.
Following graduation, he became a research track resident in psychiatry at Brown University, where he made the transition to human research, with a focus on psychiatric consequences of early life stress. Simultaneously, he underwent training in reproductive psychiatry at the Women and Infants Hospital of Rhode Island which is home to the nation’s first Mother-Infant Psychiatric Partial Hospital Program.
Upon completing his residency in 2019, Dr Novick became faculty at the University of Colorado. As a clinician, he works as a reproductive psychiatrist and acts as medical director of the CU Esketamine Program. His research focuses on two main areas: 1) understanding the effects of sex steroids in the brain; and 2) evaluating novel drug therapeutics, especially psychedelics, for mood disorders. His major current projects include an NIH-funded clinical trial investigating the neurobiology of hormonal contraception, as well as a clinical trial using psilocybin for anhedonia in Major Depressive Disorder. When not striving to move the field of psychiatry forward, he can be found at home with his wife and their 3-year-old Belgian Malinois, Zipper Gore.
