Navigating the Peer Review Process: A Guide for New Reviewers

This comprehensive course is designed for academicians, researchers, and health care professionals interested in contributing to the scientific community through the critical role of peer review. As a cornerstone of academic publishing, peer review ensures the integrity, quality, and advancement of research and clinical practice. This presentation will equip participants with the fundamental principles and best practices of peer reviewing manuscripts by discussing components of journal articles that should be evaluated, the role of the peer reviewer, the skills necessary to critically evaluate a manuscript, and how to provide feedback to authors and journal editors.

Course Requirements

Dr. Robert Haight earned a Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Minnesota, College of Pharmacy in 1998 and completed a residency in Psychopharmacology Research at Regions Hospital, Saint Paul, Minnesota in 1999. Dr. Haight joined the University of Minnesota Medical Center (UMMC) in Minneapolis, Minnesota as a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Psychiatry in 2001. In May 2020 he joined the Minnesota Department of Human Services in Forensic Services at the Saint Peter Regional Treatment Center. He also spends 50% of his time working with patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities at the Southern Cities Clinic through Minnesota Department of Human Services, Direct Care and Treatment. Dr. Haight is the SPRTC residency coordinator for the Minnesota Direct Care and Treatment, PGY2 Psychiatric Pharmacy Residency Program. His interests include the use of shared decision-making aids, psychotropic stewardship, and improving transitions of care by utilizing psychiatric pharmacy and medication therapy management teams.

  1. Identify key components of a journal article (e.g., abstract, introduction/background, study design, methodology, results, discussion, and conclusion) that should be evaluated during the peer review process.
  2. Describe the role of a peer reviewer and the skills necessary for critically evaluating a manuscript.
  3. Explain how to provide clear, constructive feedback authors can use to improve their manuscript.
  4. Indicate what feedback should be provided to journal editors as part of the peer review process.
