I volunteer because I believe strongly in the work of AAPP to advance the practice of pharmacy as well as support persons with serious mental illness.
I Gain…
The opportunity to meet many great individuals in the AAPP community which has provided me connectedness and collaboration across states and from one job setting to another. It has also given me opportunities to learn about broader subjects beyond clinical pharmacy, including billing for services, planning educational sessions, and advocating for new services on a broader scale.
My Employer Benefits…
From the knowledge I have gained which has been used to change some of our local prescribing policies and practices. Additionally, my connections have provided access to people within the AAPP community who have expertise in subjects outside my area of experience.
My Volunteer Tip
Volunteer in areas outside of your comfort zone which, in my case, have provided me the greatest learning opportunities. It can feel daunting but I would encourage you to embrace opportunities to grow your understanding of a particular subject. Then, share your voice and your story as to why you work in mental health. No two of us have the exact same practice area, so every one of us has valuable experiences to share.
