Judith M. Hyatt

Judith M. Hyatt, PharmD, BCPP, is a psychiatric clinical pharmacist with the VA Western New York Healthcare System and Director of a PGY2 Psychiatric Pharmacy Practice residency program. Before she ventured into psychiatric pharmacy practice, her work included infectious diseases and oncology research. Dr. Hyatt’s current position entails inpatient psychiatry where she manages acute manifestations of mental illness and substance abuse, and outpatient psychiatry where she runs a Pharmacist-directed PTSD medication management clinic as well as a weekly antipsychotic depot injection clinic. Dr Hyatt also serves on a Peer Review Committee for the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program (CDMRP) for PTSD and traumatic brain injury.

In the Pharmacist-directed PTSD clinic, Dr. Hyatt evaluates veterans with PTSD symptoms referred from the OEF/OIF office (Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom) and prescribes and manages medications as part of a collaborative agreement with the chief of psychiatry. Her clinic focus is on patient education, understanding of mental illness, development of coping skills, and treatment adherence. What she finds most rewarding is the satisfaction she receives in seeing families reunite, and veterans completing their education and reintegrating into the community as their mental health improves.

As a CPNP member, Dr. Hyatt is interested in sharing and implementing innovative pharmacy practice strategies, and lobbying for reimbursement for pharmacy services as part of a national effort through CMS. Dr. Hyatt’s current research interests include educational pieces for ethnic minority veterans’ participation in studies and the metabolic impact of switching antipsychotic therapy to ziprasidone. You may have recently come across Dr. Hyatt’s name on the CPNP list serve discussions. She is also a regular attendee at CPNP Annual Meetings.
