Session Summary

Virtual mental health care has significantly increased since the onset of the Public Health Emergency related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The rapid transition to telehealth was enabled by several temporary changes to state and federal regulations. Telehealth is mitigating viral risk, preventing gaps in care, and increasing access to care. However, telehealth also has a unique set of challenges and potential barriers to providing the appropriate level of care. Practitioners established virtual care best practices, which promote the gold standard of mental health care in a virtual environment, to address these challenges. This presentation will explore how mental health screens, physical evaluations and suicide risk assessments can be successfully completed via virtual care with knowledge of virtual care requirements and emergency procedures. Methods for effectively treating mental health and substance use disorders in a telehealth setting will be discussed.
