Session Summary

The Teaching Community is hosting a webinar on the topic of Innovative Pharmacy Practices and Teaching Methods. The webinar will focus on unique and innovative pharmacy practices and teaching methods within the area of psychiatry. The participant will be able to learn more about innovative services such as administering and educating other pharmacists on long-acting injectables. Additionally, methods of incorporating students and residents in various innovative practice settings will also be discussed.

Dr. Tonya Gross, PharmD, BCPP is a clinical psychiatric pharmacist at Avera Behavioral Health Center. She began her practice here about 2 years ago after her PGY-2 Psychiatric Pharmacy Residency. She splits her time between a 124 bed inpatient psychiatric hospital and ambulatory pharmacy services in the psychiatric outpatient clinic. Tonya will be discussing some of her unique ambulatory pharmacy services such as administration of long acting injectable antipsychotics and naltrexone, psychiatric consult services for rural primary care clinics, and medication management appointments within her onsite practice location. In addition, Tonya precepts PGY2 and PGY1 residents and will discuss how they are incorporated into her practice.

Dr. Julie Kissack serves as the Chair of Pharmacy Practice at Harding University College of Pharmacy. Julie Kissack, Pharm.D., BCPP, FCCP has practiced in psychiatric pharmacy for the past 30 years and will discuss novel practice sites for psychiatric pharmacists. Recently, Arkansas legislation has been inacted that will allow pharmacists to administer long-acting injectable antipsychotics to patients needing control of psychotic symptomatology. Julie will be involved in educational efforts for pharmacists engaged in the Community Pharmacy Enhanced Services Network in the state.

Dr. Krina H. Patel is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor at Rutgers University. Krina H. Patel, PharmD, BCPP is also a member of a multidisciplinary team at the Integrated Health Home. Krina established her clinical practice at the Integrated Health Home 2 years ago and has been providing services to underserved patients with serious mental illnesses. Krina precepts APPE students, PGY-1 residents and PGY-2 residents as well. A few of the clinical services that Krina provides and involves her students and residents with includes: pharmacy consultations at patient homes, blister packing services and telephone consultations.
