Session Summary

The Teaching Community is hosting a webinar on the topic of IPPEs and APPEs and how to incorporate psychiatry and neurology into experiential education. The webinar will focus on describing the structure of IPPEs and APPEs of the speakers and how participants can work to ensure students are exposed to patients with psychiatric and neurologic conditions in their experiential education. The participant will be able to learn more about how incorporating IPPEs and APPEs in psychiatry and neurology can help promote student engagement with this population and reduce stigma. This webinar is intended for preceptors or pharmacists interested in precepting.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe examples of how pharmacy students can be incorporated into the care of persons with psychiatric and neurologic conditions during IPPE and APPE experiences.
  2. Explain how partnering with other pharmacists or providers can increase exposure of IPPE and APPE students to this population.
  3. Discuss ways IPPE and APPE students may help expand your reach in optimizing care for individuals living with psychiatric and neurologic conditions.

Dr. Julie Thiel is Pharmacy Director and Lab Supervisor for Winnebago Mental Health Institute and Wisconsin Resource Center for the State of Wisconsin Department of Health Services. She received her BS pharmacy degree from University of Wisconsin- Madison and PharmD degree from the University of Florida- Gainesville graduating with the Working Professional PharmD Outstanding Leadership Award. She oversees the shared services pharmacy and laboratory teams which provide services to a ~200 bed Joint Commission accredited hospital and a ~ 400 bed secure treatment facility accredited through the National Commission on Correctional Healthcare. Julie serves as a team preceptor for elective APPE rotations for University of Wisconsin Madison and Concordia University of Wisconsin. She is the 2016 recipient of the UW Madison School of Pharmacy's APPE Larry Boh Clinical Instructor Excellence Award. She is actively involved as volunteer faculty for the Northeastern Wisconsin Psychiatry Residency Program through the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Dr. Jacquelyn Bainbridge is a Professor in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy at the University of Colorado Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Dr. Bainbridge serves as a clinical pharmacy specialist at the Anschutz Outpatient Pavilion in the Neurology Clinic. This is part of the Neurology Residency Teaching Program at the University of Colorado Denver. Services provided in these clinics include: review of patient information identifying and resolving drug-related problems and consultations; recommending alternative medication therapies for patients; evaluating patients for medication toxicity; providing cost-effective recommendat​ions; providing education to health care practitioners, patients and families; monitoring for drug interactions; avoidance of drug interactions; and reporting of drug interactions.

Dr. Jolene Bostwick is Associate Chair and Clinical Associate Professor of the Department of Clinical Pharmacy at the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy. She received her PharmD degree from the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy. Following graduation, she completed a specialty residency in psychiatry with Kaiser Permanente in Denver, CO. At Michigan Medicine, her practice site is in adult ambulatory psychiatry where she serves as a preceptor for IPPE and APPE experiential rotations as well as pharmacy residents.
