  • PGY2 Other Features: The program is comprised of six required and three elective rotations across the age continuum for both acute and ambulatory psychiatric practice. The rotations are generally five weeks in duration; the research and staffing/inpatient operations experiences occur longitudinally within the main inpatient pharmacy and psychiatric pharmacy over the course of the year. Additional elective rotations available include clinical toxicology, neuroscience critical care, and emergency psychiatry. The PGY2 Psychiatric Pharmacy Resident is given an academic faculty appointment as a clinical instructor in the VCU School of Pharmacy with opportunities to provide didactic instruction (e.g., lectures, team-based learning and skills lab sessions, case conferences) and experiential training (e.g., APPEs) for Doctor of Pharmacy students from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Pharmacy. Residents may participate in an elective teaching and learning certificate program.

Program Philosophy

The VCUHS residency program is designed to provide advanced training and education, beyond the PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency, in psychopharmacology and psychiatric pharmacy practice. Clinical emphasis is on acute adult psychiatry with opportunities for experiences in child/adolescent psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, neurology, and in ambulatory psychiatry settings. Upon completion of this PGY2 program, the resident will be prepared for a psychiatric clinical pharmacist position with adjunct clinical faculty responsibilities.

Site Special Features

The primary practice sites are the inpatient psychiatry units at VCU Health and Virginia Treatment Center for Children, a state of the art psychiatric facility for management of children and adolescents. Additional sites include affiliated clinics including, but not limited to, child and adolescent psychiatry and substance abuse.
