October President’s Letter: Collaborating to Advance Pharmacy

Happy Pharmacists Month-a month where we celebrate you and your impact on patients you serve! This month, I had the opportunity to represent AAPP and contribute to my first Joint Commission of Pharmacy Practitioners meeting. I left this meeting deeply inspired by the remarkable leadership and collaborative spirit driving pharmacy practice across the country.

From innovative partnerships like the Align Summit’s national initiative to unite provider and health plan relationships for optimized medication outcomes, to successes like those highlighted with clinical testing and treatment at Walmart, we’re seeing momentum for pharmacists advancing patient care. Additional initiatives are addressing our most pressing challenges including payment reform, workplace culture, and mental health, resulting in actionable solutions and unified calls for change. Employers, payers, and pharmacy leaders alike are rallying around the need to demonstrate the distinctive value pharmacists bring. It's a great time to reflect on our unique value as psychiatric pharmacists and the value we add for our patients.

Collaborative initiatives and coalitions are key ways of making our profession’s voice heard. Recent examples include the appointment of Past President Michelle Geier to the ASAM OUD Guideline Committee and AAPP’s partnership with the Schizophrenia & Psychosis Action Alliance to bring you a comprehensive clozapine educational activity (registration now available!).

AAPP is very proud of our work on coalitions. Your membership and support allows AAPP to be sitting at important tables on your behalf. For that, we are grateful. Our work is far from done, but the energy and creativity I am witnessing reaffirm the power of our community to transform practice for the benefit of patients everywhere.
