OIG Issues Report on Timely Suicide-related Follow-up Care

On Sept. 4, the Office of the Inspector General issued a report finding that half of the children who had been seen for suicidal thoughts or behaviors did not receive any follow-up care in the week after treatment. The study examined nearly 225,000 children 10-17 who were enrolled in Medicaid and had been hospitalized or visited emergency departments. “Subject matter experts whom OIG interviewed attributed the lack of timely follow-up visits to provider shortages and difficulties connecting children to care,” the report says. OIG recommended CMS assist low-performing states to ensure these children receive timely follow-up care, with CMC concurring.
