Target Audience

If you are a pharmacist, nurse practitioner, or other health care professional involved in the comprehensive medication management of individuals living with mental health and/or substance use disorders, we invite you to participate in this online course.

Session Summary

There has been an increase in patient access to care, medication related outcomes, adherence, and medication safety with the integration of psychiatric pharmacists into mental health hospitals and clinics. However, psychotropic stewardship programs would play a key role in the advancement of psychiatric pharmacy practice and there is not yet a national model for healthcare systems, psychiatry services, or pharmacists to implement these programs. Practical experience with how to how to set up psychotropic stewardship in general practice is also lacking. The ideal scenario is ensuring every patient with a mental health diagnosis receiving a psychotropic medication has their medications reviewed, optimized, and/or managed by a psychiatric pharmacist. Patients taking antipsychotics are at high risk for adverse effects and polypharmacy, so the focus of this session is on implementation of psychotropic stewardship programs for antipsychotics. The role of the psychiatric pharmacist and methods for overcoming barriers to implementing these programs will also be discussed.
