Target Audience

This course is designed for pharmacists, nurse practitioners or other health care professionals involved in the comprehensive medication management of psychiatric and/or neurological patients.

Session Summary

E-cigarette use has been increasing among adults and adolescents since these products were introduced to the United States in 2007. The e-cigarettes market-place has rapidly evolved due to targeted marketing and studies on multiple aspects of e-cigarette use are being published faster than those in health care can assess their importance to clinical practice Given these changes in the products being used and what is known about them, it is important for pharmacists and other health care providers to stay current on emerging data regarding e-cigarettes. Since pharmacists are a primary resource to consumers on smoking cessation products, we need to be aware of the newest data in order to provide accurate recommendations regarding the role that e-cigarettes can play in facilitating successful cessation from combustible cigarettes and the risks associated with e-cigarette use. The audience should leave the presentation with an understanding of what e-cigarettes are, their risks, and if they have the potential to offer any benefits to current smokers.
