Course Description
Tuesday, April 19, 2016, 9:00-10:00 a.m.
Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) are important skills that can complement or in some cases, be used in lieu of pharmacotherapy. Psychiatric pharmacists should be able to adeptly discuss these skills with patients including how MBIs compare to pharmacotherapy in terms of effectiveness. Pharmacists themselves can benefit tremendously from practicing these skills in both personal and professional settings to reduce stress and burnout.
Learning Objectives
- Compare the effectiveness of mindfulness-based interventions to pharmacologic treatment.
- Discuss barriers to utilizing mindfulness-based interventions in patients with psychiatric and/or neurologic disorders.
- List key points to discuss with patients when recommending mindfulness as part of a patient care plan.
- Identify how mindfulness can be used by pharmacists to self-manage professional and personal stress.
- Develop strategies for utilizing mindfulness techniques in one’s own life.
Target Audience
This course is designed for pharmacists, nurse practitioners or other healthcare professionals involved in the comprehensive medication management of psychiatric and/or neurological patients.
