The Cycle of Chaos to Hope: Navigating Schizophrenia as a Mother and Caregiver

Course Description

Families often become the front-line caregivers for people living with schizophrenia, yet they are too often left out of the treatment conversation. In this deeply personal keynote, author, advocate, and mother Randye Kaye shares her family's journey through psychosis, anosognosia, homelessness, addiction, incarceration, recovery, and hope. Through stories of heartbreak, resilience, and unexpected breakthroughs, attendees will gain a firsthand understanding of the emotional toll of caregiving and the critical role compassionate collaboration can play in improving outcomes. This session will inspire psychiatric pharmacists to see families as valued partners in care and explore practical ways to build trust, improve communication, and support recovery for both patients and those who love them.

Learning Objectives

  1. Discuss the emotional, practical, and systemic challenges families face while caring for a loved one living with schizophrenia.
  2. Describe how anosognosia, substance use, and fragmented systems of care affect medication adherence, treatment engagement, and family dynamics.
  3. Identify practical strategies psychiatric pharmacists can use to communicate effectively and collaborate with family caregivers while respecting patient-centered care and privacy considerations.
  4. Explain a family-partnership approach that fosters empathy, trust, and shared hope, leading to stronger support systems and better recovery outcomes.

Target Audience

If you are a pharmacist, nurse practitioner, or other health care professional involved in the comprehensive medication management of individuals living with mental health and/or substance use disorders, we invite you to participate in this online course.
