This webinar focuses on important factors related to use of LAIs for substance use disorders, such as target patient populations, indications, product preparation, dosing, administration techniques, adverse effects, storage requirements, and monitoring recommendations.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe dosing and administration, including product preparation, for naltrexone long acting injectable (LAI) and buprenorphine LAI.
  2. Identify contraindications, warnings/precautions, common adverse effects and potential mitigation strategies for naltrexone LAI and buprenorphine LAI.
  3. Describe the storage requirements and stability data of naltrexone LAI and buprenorphine LAI.
  4. Outline a plan for monitoring and follow up of a patient receiving naltrexone LAI or buprenorphine LAI.

Benjamin Miskle, MBA, PharmD
Clinical Assistant Professor, University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine and College of Pharmacy

Benjamin Miskle, PharmD, is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry, and the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy. He earned his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Missouri–Kansas City and completed both a PGY 1 Pharmacy Practice Residency and a PGY 2 Psychiatric Pharmacy Residency at the Chillicothe Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Dr. Miskle practices in outpatient psychiatry with a clinical focus in Addiction Medicine, including medications for substance use disorders such as extended release naltrexone and long acting injectable buprenorphine. He serves as Assistant Director of the Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship in Addiction Medicine and Co Director of the Psychopharmacology Didactic Series for Psychiatry Residents, and provides care across addiction medicine walk in clinics, mobile MAT services, and interdisciplinary psychiatry settings. His scholarly and grant funded work focuses on improving access to evidence based addiction treatment, harm reduction, and integrated care models. Dr. Miskle has received multiple awards, including the Iowa Pharmacy Association’s Excellence in Innovation Award and Faculty Preceptor of the Year, and has led statewide initiatives such as the Naloxone in Schools (IA-NEXT), expansion of hepatitis C and HIV testing and treatment with SUD programs (iACCESS), and substance use disorder training expansion (RISE IA) projects. He is an active member of the Iowa Pharmacy Association and the American Association of Psychiatric Pharmacists and regularly delivers continuing education on medications for opioid and alcohol use disorders.
