This webinar reviews the signs, symptoms, and diagnostic criteria for serious mental illnesses; guideline recommendations for LAI antipsychotic use; the barriers, advantages, and disadvantages for the use of LAIs; and the role of the pharmacist in LAI administration in the pharmacy setting.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the signs, symptoms, and diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and schizoaffective disorder.
  2. Identify advantages and disadvantages for the use of long-acting injectable (LAI) antipsychotics.
  3. Describe the role of the pharmacist in LAI antipsychotic administration in the pharmacy setting.

Target Audience

We invite you to participate in this online course if you are a pharmacist, nurse, or other health care professional interested in administering and/or learning more about psychotropic long-acting injectables for patients living with serious mental illness or substance use disorders.

Samantha Catanzano, PharmD, BCPP
Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Texas at Austin

After graduating with her Pharm.D. degree from the University of Texas at Austin, Dr. Catanzano completed a pharmacy practice residency followed by a psychiatric pharmacy practice residency at Seton Healthcare Family and The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy. Following her residency training, she gained experience as a clinical and staff pharmacist at the Austin State Hospital. Currently, she serves as a Clinical Associate Professor for The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy with an adjunctive appointment at Dell Medical School. In addition to her academic appointments, she is a Board-Certified Psychiatric Pharmacist at UT Health Austin within the Integrated Behavioral Health Department where she serves various clinics including Primary Care and the Bipolar Disorder Center. In this role, she functions as part of a multidisciplinary team to address complex pharmacotherapy and mental health needs. She also serves on a leadership team for UT Health Austin’s Zero Suicide Initiative and in various leadership positions within the American Association of Psychiatric Pharmacists (AAPP). Her research interests include assessing student and pharmacist well-being in the academic and clinical environment. Another area of her research aims to advocate for the role of the pharmacist in increasing access to a variety of mental health and substance use disorder services.
