Overdose Deaths Fall

Federal data running through Aug. 2025 and released on Jan. 14 revealed a drop in year-over-year overdose deaths in 45 states. The data, released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, shows 73,000 people died from overdoses in the 12-month period that ended August 2025, a decline of roughly 21% from the 92,000 reported in the previous 12-month period. Researchers hypothesize that an increase in the availability of naloxone, the impact of opioid settlement funding, and an expansion of substance use treatment played a role in the decrease.
