The Early Practitioner Award will recognize the efforts of psychiatric pharmacists in the first 5 years of practice or 5 years after completion of post doctoral training. Recipients will have demonstrated commitment to AAPP and its mission to “advance the reach and practice of psychiatric pharmacy and serve as the voice of the specialty.” The recipient serves as a role model for future leaders within AAPP and Psychiatric Pharmacy.
Commitment to the organization is demonstrated through volunteerism and committee participation within AAPP as well as presentation of posters and educational sessions at AAPP Annual Meetings or other AAPP accredited educational activities. Commitment to AAPP’s mission is demonstrated through activities showcasing psychiatric pharmacy on a local, state, and/or national level, to include research, publications, presentations outside AAPP, and activities with organizations outside the individual’s place of employment.
Criteria
- Nominee has been an AAPP member for 1 year or more, including the current year of the submission.
- Has practiced as a psychiatric pharmacist for 5 years or less, either post Pharm.D. or after completion of post-doctoral training.
- Board certification as a Board-Certified Psychiatric Pharmacist (BCPP) is not required but will be weighted in award scoring.
- Actively engaged in AAPP as an active pharmacist member through activities such as (may not be all inclusive):
- Volunteerism (e.g., abstract reviewer, MHC reviewer, etc.)
- Committee membership and/or participation
- Faculty/speaker for AAPP products or events
- Authorship of products, toolkits, AAPP papers
- Posters, presentations, and other formal activities at Annual Meeting
- Representation of AAPP to include visits with legislators, work on coalitions and other workgroups on behalf of AAPP
- Representation of AAPP to include visits with legislators, work on coalitions and other workgroups on behalf of AAPP
- Engagement in psychiatric pharmacy advocacy at a local, state, and/or national level in one or more of the following:
- Volunteer work highlighting psychiatric pharmacy outside the nominee’s place of employment and outside AAPP
- Advocacy for psychiatric pharmacy to the public, other professions, state and federal policymakers and regulatory bodies
- Involvement in advancing psychiatric initiatives that impact patients, caregivers, and health care workers outside the nominee’s place of employment.
- Contributing to the advancement of psychiatric pharmacy practice through research, publications, and presentations.
- Development of student pharmacists and residents in psychiatric pharmacy through mentorship and training.
- Development and implementation of a new psychiatric pharmacy practice or program.
Applicant Materials
This award is intended to recognize psychiatric pharmacists working in the field of mental health care which is inclusive of substance use disorders. Nominations for this awards can be made by the applicant themselves or an individual(s) who wishes to nominate and submit the required elements for consideration by the committee. Judith J. Saklad Memorial Award recipients are not eligible for consideration of any other AAPP Awards given that the Saklad Award is a pinnacle award and broadly encompasses the various components of other AAPP awards.
Materials to be submitted include:

- A cover letter detailing the nominee’s qualifications and explanation of the activities believed to be deserving of recognition. The letter should specifically address criteria 4 and 5. The letter should not exceed 4 pages single-spaced.
- Letter
s of support describing how the candidate meets or exceeds the above criteria. The letters should not exceed 3 pages single-spaced. - Other supporting documentation of their activity(ies) towards the award. This may include presentations, developed materials, posters, etc. that demonstrate the nominee’s level of involvement and leadership with the activity(ies).
