Beyond Childhood: Management of Autism Spectrum Disorder in Adults

Course Description

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a lifelong condition, yet much of the clinical focus remains centered on childhood. As individuals with ASD age, symptoms may evolve and new comorbidities may emerge, often complicating care. This session explores the epidemiology and progression of ASD across the lifespan, highlights common co-occurring conditions in adulthood, and reviews current evidence for medication management of core symptoms in adult populations. Psychiatric pharmacists will gain insights to better support this often-overlooked patient group.

Learning Objectives

  1. Explain the epidemiology and common comorbidities of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) throughout the lifespan.
  2. Describe the potential effects of aging on ASD symptoms.
  3. Identify appropriate medication treatment options for the core symptoms of ASD in adulthood.

Target Audience

If you are a pharmacist, nurse practitioner, or other health care professional involved in the comprehensive medication management of individuals living with mental health and/or substance use disorders, we invite you to participate in this course.
