Navigating Real Challenges: Applying Artificial Intelligence to Personalized Treatment Planning in Mental Health

Course Description

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly emerging as a tool in mental health care, offering opportunities to enhance treatment planning, predict outcomes, and support clinical decision-making. This session will introduce psychiatric pharmacists to currently available AI tools and how they may be used in clinical practice. Attendees will critically examine the limitations of AI, including concerns around data bias, patient privacy, and clinical applicability. This session will explore how psychiatric pharmacists can responsibly and ethically incorporate AI into personalized treatment strategies while staying informed about this evolving technology.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify available artificial intelligence tools used for treatment planning in health care settings.
  2. Assess the limitations of utilizing artificial intelligence in treatment planning for patients with psychiatric disorders.
  3. Examine how artificial intelligence can be responsibly utilized in the care of patients with psychiatric disorders.

Andrea Sikora, PharmD, MSCR, BCCCP, FCCM, FCCP is an Associate Professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in the Department of Biomedical Informatics and adjunct faculty at the University of Georgia (UGA) College of Pharmacy. Dr. Sikora graduated from UGA College of Pharmacy, completed her PGY1 Pharmacy Residency and PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency at the University of North Carolina (UNC) Medical Center in Chapel Hill, NC, and completed her Master of Science in Clinical Research from Emory University. She has received several federal grants evaluating applications of artificial intelligence for optimized medication use in the intensive care unit (ICU) and is an author of the book Pay It Forward: A Map to Mentorship in Medicine and InteGREAT: How to make great healthcare teams.
