Target Audience

If you are a pharmacist, nurse practitioner, or other health care professional involved in the comprehensive medication management of individuals living with mental health and/or substance use disorders, we invite you to participate in this online course.

Session Summary

Pharmacotherapy is typically not considered a first-line treatment for personality disorders but there is now early data supporting pharmacologic treatment for symptoms associated with specific personality disorders. Most of the research has focused on borderline personality disorder. International guidelines differ on pharmacotherapy recommendations for personality disorders and there is little to no guidance on how to approach appropriate prescribing and deprescribing when indicated. Many psychiatric pharmacists encounter patients with personality disorders in practice and need to understand when pharmacologic treatment is appropriate. This session will focus on evidence-based treatment of personality disorders, with an emphasis on borderline personality disorder and on prescribing and deprescribing considerations.
