President's Message

Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to the New Year and new promises ahead for both the country and CPNP. With healthcare reform on the horizon, CPNP is implementing activities to keep abreast of the opportunities. Strategic planning has focused on prioritizing strategies with the greatest impact, such as developing educational products and affiliations.

We have committed to using technology to advance communication between members and to attract new members. Legislative activity will become more prominent while we work with partner organizations to gain pharmacist recognition and reimbursement in the new congressional session. Watch for action alerts when bills regarding pharmacy issues are introduced. During these difficult economic times, CPNP is also working to ensure the long-term financial health of the organization.

The board is excited about the opportunities that lie ahead and thank all of our members and volunteers for your efforts in making these happen.

Carla Cobb, CPNP President

CPNP in Action

  • Committee Appointments for 2009-2010: The CPNP Board of Directors is hard at work on 2009-2010 committee appointments. One hundred and thirty-eight CPNP members have volunteered to serve on one of CPNP’s 10 standing committees. With such strong response, all volunteers will not be placed immediately. However, CPNP anticipates tapping into its volunteer base with the formation of small specific project groups as tasks/issues arise throughout the year. Committee appointments will be announced within the first two weeks in February. 2009-2010 committees will meet on Saturday, April 18 from 6-8:30 p.m. in Jacksonville.
  • Veterans Affairs Task Force: The VA Task Force met this past week to discuss the increasing opportunities for psychiatric pharmacists in VA and identify collaborative efforts with VA and CPNP to facilitate the growing demand for psychiatric pharmacy specialists. The task force, chaired by Matthew Fuller, will develop recommendations regarding marketing and recruitment of pharmacists, increasing residency training sites, and delivery of educational and skill development modules for pharmacists transitioning to mental health care environments. Updates will be provided to the CPNP membership as more information becomes available.
  • Strategic Planning: The Board continued their strategic planning efforts this week with a full-day meeting on action plan development and prioritization. The goal is to present a finalized strategic plan with accompanying action plans to the membership at the 2009 Annual Meeting in Jacksonville, April 19-22.
  • CPNP Involvement at 2008 ASHP Mid-Year: CPNP provided a 2-hour symposium entitled Antidepressants and Suicide Risk in Children and Adults instructed by Julie Dopheide, PharmD, BCPP and Steve Stoner, PharmD, BCPP (Chair). Over 150 individuals attended the programming which will be revised for offering as recertification programming at the 2009 CPNP Annual Meeting in Jacksonville. CPNP also hosted a residency showcase with the goal of promoting psychiatric pharmacy as a career choice. Residency and Post-Graduate Training Committee Chair Julie Dopheide reported excellent traffic. Check out the psychiatric pharmacy residency brochure developed by this committee and distributed at Mid-Year.
  • CPNP on Facebook: Come join CPNP on Facebook by searching for Carla Cobb of Billings, Montana! A small but growing group of members is using this social networking site as one more way to share information.
