On July 27, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) released the 2025 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) results. This survey provides insights into the experiences of U.S. residents experiencing mental health and substance use disorders. The 2025 NSDUH results found that 44.6 million people aged 12 or older (15.3%) had a past-year substance use disorder (SUD) and 54.6 million adults (20.6%) had any mental illness, with adolescent major depressive episodes falling from 20.8% in 2021 to 15.1% in 2025 and adult serious mental illness (SMI) declining from 7.9% to 6.9% over the same period. Notably, only about 1 in 6 people needing substance use treatment received services, with 86.4% of those with an SUD receiving neither treatment nor other services, and roughly a third of adults with SMI receiving neither mental health treatment nor other services.
