Target Audience

If you are a pharmacist, nurse practitioner, or other health care professional involved in the comprehensive medication management of individuals living with mental health and/or substance use disorders, we invite you to participate in this online course.

Session Summary

As psychiatric pharmacists we are likely to encounter and be responsible for the safety of many patients on clozapine. Currently there is an underutilization of clozapine in some cases due to the unease providers have with the medication, despite its documented superiority. Competent providers should be able to identify and manage more common and severe side effects associated with clozapine use. Additionally, as the medication expert the pharmacist must be able to recognize the unpredictable and rare side effects of clozapine.

This program will provide an overview of the well-documented side effects limiting clozapine use but will focus on the less common side effects: interstitial nephritis, liver injury, and withdrawal phenomenon.
