Session Summary

AAPP and the MHC Editorial Board are excited to offer a peer review training opportunity to members!

Peer review for a journal can be intimidating but this course is designed to equip residents and new practitioners with the essential skills needed for conducting high-quality peer reviews. Here is how this cohort mentoring program works:

  1. Complete the 0.5 hour on-demand course: Navigating the Peer Review Process: A Guide for New Reviewers
  2. Register for this course.
  3. Registrants will be assigned to one of four peer review cohorts and will receive a calendar invitation for the corresponding date after staff confirms (1) member status, and (2) completion of the on-demand course.
  4. Registrants will receive a peer review invitation from the MHC approximately 2 weeks prior to their assigned date. Registrants must accept the invitation and complete their reviews by the date specified (prior to the meeting).
  5. At the mentoring meeting, the MHC handling editor and the 5 participants will discuss the peer review comments and processes.

This collaborative environment fosters learning through peer discussion and expert feedback from an MHC editor, ensuring that participants develop the ability to provide specific, thorough, and constructive reviews. While this process will not guarantee expertise, it provides a valuable opportunity for residents and new practitioners to enhance their professional development and contribute to the advancement of pharmacy practice through high-quality peer review.

Registrants are assigned to cohorts in the order they are registered. All cohorts will meet on Tuesday afternoons, so only those with availability at that time should register. The meeting times are:

  1. October 7, 2025, at 3PM Central
  2. November 4, 2025, at 3PM Central
  3. January 6, 2026, at 3PM Central
  4. February 3, 2026, at 3PM Central

Learning Objectives

  1. Build confidence to conduct high-quality peer reviews through practice and professional discussions with peers and editors.
  2. Develop the ability to critically assess the quality, originality, and significance of journal manuscripts using expert feedback from journal editors.
  3. Improve the quality of manuscripts by providing detailed, specific, and actionable feedback to authors.
