Course Description
The pharmacology of serotonergic medications is becoming increasingly complicated as new agents are introduced and as more information about the pharmacology of existing agents is learned. Pharmacists (and psychiatric pharmacists in particular) are likely to be the health care professionals most knowledgeable about how a particular medication’s receptor binding profile is likely to affect target symptoms and to be associated with side effects. As this is a rapidly evolving field, it is likely that most pharmacists could use up to date information on the current state of knowledge of this topic.
Learning Objectives
- Describe the current state of knowledge regarding serotonergic abnormalities in various psychiatric disorders.
- Discuss how a medication’s serotonergic receptor binding profile may impact target symptoms when used in the treatment of psychiatric disorder(s).
- Identify the side effects that are likely to occur when provided with the receptor binding profile of a specific medication.
