CPNP Communities Week Fall 2021

Course Description

CPNP Communities Week is a 3-day virtual event, exclusively for CPNP members! This event will feature webinars from the CPNP communities, Mental Health First Aid, and an update on CPNP's advocacy roadmap and activities. We have extended the week to incorporate CPNP's inagural Residency Showcase, free for all PGY1 residents and students!

Community Week sessions are designed by your peers to focus on relevant, current issues in practice with intention to foster open discussion and information sharing. Please see the schedule below for more information.

Communities Week is free for CPNP members who only need to register once to attend any CPNP webinar (separate registration is required for MHFA) and the Showcase. Registrants may attend as many sessions as desired, and all recorded sessions* will be posted following the event. ACPE credit is not offerred during CPNP Communities Week. Non-members attending the Residency Showcase are offered a separate registration option for the 2-day showcase only.

*Mental Health First Aid and the Residency Showcase will not be recorded.

10:30 AM: Seeking Financial Support for an Investigator Initiated Study

Presented by the Research Community

The research community is hosting a webinar discussing ways to seek financial support for investigator initiated studies. We will briefly discuss the process of obtaining industry support for your research. How do I find the Investigator Sponsored Studies section on a pharmaceutical company’s website? What do submissions entail? Who should I speak to about an idea for an investigator initiated study? All ranges of research experience are encouraged to attend. A brief presentation will be followed by an open forum for community discussion.

12:00 PM: Buprenorphine Initiation Approaches: Micro vs Macro inductions

Presented by the Substance Use Disorders Strategies (SUDS) Community

By popular demand, the Substance Use Disorders Community is hosting a webinar on the novel approaches to initiating buprenorphine therapy for opioid use disorder. Our guest speaker, Dr. Robert Cole Pueringer, puts theory into practice as the at Addiction Medicine Fellow at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. This webinar appeals to all levels of expertise as we introduce the basics of buprenorphine, classic induction protocol, and evidence for newer strategies such as micro and macro dosing. Following the didactic presentation, there will be a case example to review with time for questions and discussion.

1:30 PM: How to Engage Patients with Creative Education Groups

Presented by the Patient Medication Education Groups (PMEG) Community

The Patient Medication Education Group Community is hosting a webinar on the topic of how to engage patients with creative education groups. Speaker Daniel Greer conducts a weekly group in inpatient psychiatry and outpatient psychiatry. Patients are enrolled in the outpatient program for 6 months. This requires creative thinking to have new and exciting groups every week. Daniel will be providing examples and strategies to strengthen your group experiences. Following the presentation, there will be time for discussion with community members.

This discussion will focus on creative ways to engage patients in group sessions. This webinar is intended for pharmacists or other providers who conduct group sessions.

The presentation will follow the following structure:

  • Going beyond medication groups – how and why to expand your groups into other areas
  • How to engage patients – creative strategies for the best retention
  • Example groups and activities
  • Open forum

3:00 PM - 8:00 PM: Mental Health First Aid

Supported by the CPNP Foundation

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a skills-based training course that teaches participants about mental health and substance-use issues. The CPNP Foundation is pleased to offer MHFA in the new, blended virtual format that involves 2 hours of home study coursework and 5 hours with a certified instructor in a Zoom classroom. MHFA will be offered on two dates, and space is limited to the first 45 registrants on each date. ACPE credit is not available for the blended-virtual course.

Date #1: Monday, October 4: 4:00-9:00 PM Eastern/3:00-8:00 PM Central/1:00-6:00 PM Pacific

Home Study: Participants will receive access to home study course materials the week of 9/20 and will need to complete all home study requirements (about 2 hours) before participating in the 5-hour, instructor-led training.

10:30 AM: CPNP Update: Advocating for Psychiatric Pharmacists and CMM

Presented by the Government Affairs (GA) and Professional Affairs (PA) Committees

The Government Affairs (GA) and Professional Affairs (PA) Committees are hosting a webinar about ongoing advocacy efforts in CPNP. The webinar introduces the CPNP Advocacy Framework, and it explains how the framework applies to the promotion of comprehensive medication management (CMM). It will also include a brief update on legislative activities and other ongoing work. Following the presentation, there will be plenty of time for you to ask questions of the GA chair, the PA chair, and our GA consultant.

12:00 PM: The AFFINITY Randomized Clinical Trial: Journal Club Presentation

Presented by the Neurology Community

The Neurology Community is hosting a webinar-based journal club presentation on depression outcomes among patients treated with fluoxetine for stroke recovery: the AFFINITY randomized clinical trial.1 Depression is common within the first year after a stroke and may have a negative impact on stroke recovery. The primary outcome of the AFFINITY trial is to evaluate functional ability after 6 months of treatment with fluoxetine 20 mg daily versus placebo in adults with a recent stroke. The presence of clinically significant depressive symptoms is a secondary endpoint of this study. Speaker, Dr. Kelsey Morgan, PharmD, MPH, BCPS, is an Assistant Professor – Acute Care, Neurology at Shenandoah University’s Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy. She is PGY-2 residency-trained in neurology and serves as a neurology clinical pharmacy specialist at Winchester Medical Center in Winchester, Virginia. She works with the medical center’s neurology consult service and in the neurology/trauma-focused intensive care unit. She assists in the treatment of acute ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, traumatic brain injury, seizure disorders, encephalopathies, meningitis, movement disorders, and neuropathies. Following Dr. Morgan’s presentation, there will be time for discussion with Dr. Morgan and members of CPNP’s Neurology Community.
