Program Philosophy

PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in psychiatric pharmacy. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available. Early commitment is available and encouraged for the PGY-1 residents.

PGY1 Special Features

This residency program focuses on individualized attention and professional development throughout the year by emphasizing core areas of pharmacy practice (ambulatory care, psychiatry, geriatrics, home based primary care, acute rehabilitation/antimicrobial stewardship, teaching certificate program, and administration), while customizing the learning experiences and longitudinal elective to meet the residents needs. Required longitudinal experiences available at the site include drug information, management, teaching, and administration. The Chillicothe VAMC is affiliated with seven schools of pharmacy in West Virginia, Indiana, and Ohio and has a research affiliation with the University of Cincinnati. The required teaching certificate program is through the Ohio State University

Site Special Features

The Chillicothe VAMC is located 30 miles south of Columbus, OH and provides acute and chronic psychiatric services, primary and secondary medical services, and a wide range of ambulatory care services in five outpatient clinics to serve veterans in southern Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia. In addition to training pharmacy students and residents, the Chillicothe VAMC serves as a training site for medical, psychology, nursing, physician students; along with post graduate residency training in psychiatry, optometry, and dental. PGY-1 residents have the opportunity to continue their education by early committing to the PGY-2 program.
