Behavior Health Agency to Take Down Opioid Treatment Provider List

SAMHSA plans to remove its online tool for locating public access to providers that prescribe buprenorphine for OUD and pharmacists that dispense the drug on June 1. The agency indicates it plans to work with other federal agencies and partners to develop a new locator to assist individuals in need of services to find practitioners in their community but offered no timeline. This follows separate agency guidance encouraging providers to consider tapering patients off medication assisted treatment in some cases, and a larger effort from the Department of Health and Human Services related to curbing “overmedicalization” in mental health. At the same time, other administration efforts have attempted to expand treatment for opioid addiction.
