Cannabis Reclassification Announcement

On April 22, the Department of Justice announced through a final order that it is reclassifying cannabis as a less-dangerous drug. This follows the December 2025 EO directing the department to expeditiously move cannabis from Schedule I to Schedule III of the Controlled Substances Act. The reclassification immediately places both FDA-approved cannabis products and state-licensed medical cannabis products in Schedule III. The move does not legalize the drug at the federal level; Schedule III classification recognizes accepted medical use and would significantly ease the regulatory barriers into clinical research.
